AGRICULTURAL SENSOR MESH

A development board built at e-Yantra, IIT Bombay for putting sensors across farmland: a custom PCB carrying LoRa, BLE and GSM, C firmware that lets nodes find each other and elect a leader, and a printed housing to survive being left outside.

Built during eYSIP at e-Yantra, IIT Bombay, with two other interns and two mentors. Sensor nodes spread across a field have to agree on who is in charge and when to speak, with nobody out there to reset them.

The board is our own: a fabricated PCB with an ESP32 module, SMA antenna connectors and room for LoRa, BLE and GSM, so a node can pick whichever radio the field actually allows. The enclosure around it was modelled and printed.

The firmware implements leader election and periodic time synchronisation across FreeRTOS tasks, discovers neighbours dynamically, and falls back when a node drops off or its battery runs low — then aggregates readings for periodic upload.

It is the smallest system here and the one with the least room to be wrong: it runs unattended, outdoors, on batteries.
